The world has spoken and it’s declared the quokka, the happiest, most photogenic animal on the planet. Taking the Internet by storm is the hashtag #quokkaselfie which shows the small marsupial posing for the camera, with humans, while donning its most charismatic grin. Though it bears a slight resemblance to its cousin the kangaroo, the quokka is arguably cuter, with a round body and fluffy ears. And, of course, who can ignore that smile? Interestingly, the quokka, which is about the size of a domestic cat, has no fear of humans. This is most evident in all those fun selfies.
In the wild, you’ll find these adorable animals on some smaller islands off the coast of Western Australia, largely at Rottnest Island. Quokkas usually spend their days sleeping and resting under shady bushes or dense vegetation. They can also be seen eating; their diet consists of grass, leaves, seeds and roots. But judging from the Instagram photos cataloged at #quokkaselfies, these charming creatures don’t seem to mind pausing for photos with the occasional tourist either. In fact, they look rather elated.
