Mark Fitz – On street art, getting people to buy art and how to sell art online

Mark Fitz first caught our attention during our “Put Your Art in Print” competition in 2012. He was yet to sell art on artFido but was obviously open to the new online art platform and wanted to reach a new market keen to buy art online. His “Creative Gun” was one of the most popular pieces of art listed in the competition and we were happy to feature it on our facebook page. We’re excited to have Mark now listing his art on artFido and are proud to showcase him as our current featured artist. So if you’re interested in street art, just looking to buy art that’s unique, or wanting to support an artist keen to sell art online, check out the art of Mark Fitz.

Features Artist – Mark Fitz

1. When did you begin creating art?

Like most people I started young, from drawing skulls in my maths book to decorating the school desks. It wasn’t until I’d left school around 2000 that I started taking it more seriously. I designed event flyers in exchange for a small studio space above a music venue some friends were running, I spent a lot of late nights there developing my craft and taking excursions to the streets in the early hours of the morning.

2. How would you describe your style and who or what are your influences?

My work is street art style, predominantly stencil based, I became interested in this artform as it allows me to get an image or idea up on a wall really quickly. I can spend days and weeks on creating and cutting a stencil but once that preparation is done I can then work really fast on the street. I have always been influenced by thought provoking art, I think art plays an important and powerful role in society and can be used as an instrument of change, to challenge people’s perceptions and open their mind to different ways of seeing things.

4. Did you ever think anyone would ever buy art from you?

Definitely not, it was only when I was asked to contribute to a charity exhibition in aid of homelessness with a bunch of other street artists and my piece sold that I thought just maybe I could sell some more.

5. If you could have lessons from one artist, of any time or period, who would it be and why?

Andy Warhol, I’m a big fan and I reckon we’d have a good time hanging out.

7. What made you think about selling art online?

I’m always looking for different avenues of making money from doing what I love.

8. How did you hear about artFido?

Online

9. Do you find it hard to market yourself or your art?

It’s always really hard to sell yourself, if I was representing another artist I could confidently sell the shit out of them but it’s difficult when it’s your own work, there’s a lot of self-doubt to overcome.
